Mindo or Tandayapa 1 night

The west slope – so close to Quito – has so much to offer, with fabulous hummingbird feeders and tanager feeding stations right in the heart of the mega-endemic, Chocó biome. Mostly comfortable weather with a chill to the night.

This overnighter (pre/post tour) trip is a great way to become acquainted with the birds of the upper and middle elevations of the west slope, all within easy striking distance from Quito. Aside from having excellent chances of seeing Plate-billed Mountain-Toucan, Toucan Barbet, Golden-headed Quetzal, Andean Cock-of-the-Rock, and head-spinning tanager flocks, the hummingbirds are what really shine! The lodges that we use have some of the most productive feeders anywhere, with an impressive diversity… but beware, you may find it hard to pry yourself away from them! Most of the birding is easy, and done by strolling along forested roadsides, away from main roads, but there is also the option for some trail birding behind the lodge. Expect cool to warm weather depending on the rain and cloud cover.

Included: Lodging, meals from lunch on the first day to breakfast on the last day, bilingual bird guide and transportation, entrance fees, purified water, coffee and tea station.
